I give my mom credit for a lot of things. For always putting her family and others first. For raising three more kids after me, teaching us right from wrong and loving us unconditionally no matter what. For always looking on the bright side. And for going back to school in her 50s because she wanted to be a nurse. I would also credit my mom for instilling her love for the beach in each of her kids. Our annual family vacations to St. Augustine, Florida have turned all of us corn-fed Nebraska natives into sun, surf and sand fanatics.

Mom is also responsible for introducing me to running (and is probably the reason why I love to run on the beach). For as long as I can remember, she has been a runner. In fact, we ran our first race together (and my first race ever) on May 16, 1982. It was the St. Elizabeth Fun Run, a one-mile race sponsored by the hospital where my mom worked in Lincoln, Nebraska. I was nine years old and finished in 8:41. How do I know all this? I found it in the scrapbook mom put together for me so many years ago.

Now, 26 years later, and even though I have run countless 5Ks, 10Ks, six half marathons and one full marathon, there is one race that stands out the most. It was the most recent race mom and I ran together – the Lincoln Half Marathon on May 6, 2007. We ran (and walked) together the entire 13.1 miles. It was truly an amazing experience and a memory I will always cherish. Mom said her goal was not just to finish, but finish under three hours. Her official time? 2:59:59. She beat me by three seconds.

So, for raising kids for 35 years, for doing it with grace, poise, and lots of laughter, and still being able to finish a half marathon, I say “Way to go mom!” Thanks for the inspiration.
