“Officer, I am so glad to see you! I am completely lost and need your help.” The officer gladly gave the driver directions, and the speeder, completely aware she had been driving well over the speed limit, smugly drove off without a ticket.

Police officers who stop you for speeding often will ask if you know how fast you were driving or if you know what the speed limit is. As soon as the officer walks up to you, say something before he does. The goal is to establish a relationship so that the officer will not want to give you a ticket.

If all else fails, you can always ask, “Officer, considering that I have a good driving record and want to avoid having any points on my insurance, would you consider giving me a warning instead of a ticket?” At least asking doesn’t carry a fine.
