Mothers and fathers do the best they can in raising a family,
but their ways are not always the best ways. Just because your
parents acted in certain ways, doesn’t mean you have to continue the tradition.
Choose whether you want to change the beliefs, habits, and behaviors you learned
in your family to better ones.
A fitting example is the daughter who asked her mother why she cut the end off the
rump roast before putting it in the roaster. The mother explained that her mother had
always done so. After asking the grandmother, who gave the same explanation, the
family finally received an answer from the great-grandmother. “I don’t know why you
cut the end off the roast. I cut mine because my pan was too small.”
Recognizing which habits you have learned and which habits you choose to change
is part of discovering your own true self.
